Park Avenue Money Power and the American Dream documentary

The documentary entitled, “Park Avenue: Money, Power and the American Dream,”. It illustrates the wide gap of financial and resource wealth between the very rich (1%) and the very poor on Park Avenue in New York City. Hill’s book also illustrates the wide gap in structural power between the extremely rich and poor citizens of the United States. Both Hill and the “American Dream” Documentary provide ample evidence of the barriers to social justice and particularly the critical shortcoming of Rawl’s theory of social justice (the social contract) or conceptualizing social justice as providing equal opportunities to acquire wealth.  Write a persuasive essay to inform and persuade the reader that social justice cannot simply focus on providing an equal opportunity to achieve the American Dream.

In writing your essay, be sure to answer the following questions:

1)  What is the American Dream Ideology depicted in the film?

2) What narratives of legal consciousness are in the film for the wealthy and also the disadvantaged?;

3) How is intersectionality, privilege, and Hill’s concept of ‘Nobody’ depicted in the film?;

4)  What are the processes and barriers that diminish achieving social justice through Rawl’s social contract. Or through social justice defined only as providing equal opportunity for advancement in education or employment? In answering this last question, discuss how social injustices are in the documentary, “Park Avenue … American Dream” and in Hill (one example from each). Discuss how those in structural power maintain their advantage through institutionalized racism. (at least one example from the documentary and one from Hill).

Demonstrate an understanding of the following terms through applying these terms to the selected examples from the documentary and Hill. Legitimating ideologies, privilege, procedural injustice/justice and substantive injustice/justice, institutionalized racism, structural and interpersonal power, and stigmatization. The essay should be in a word document and should be between 1,300 to 1,600 words.  Students are to connect the critical concepts from class lecture and from the readings to the content of the movie in such a way that demonstrates they understand these concepts. Paper should be free of contractions, grammar and typographical errors.
